Garden flags add beauty and color in the garden.
The bracket that holds the flagpole is simple to install with a screwdriver or cordless drill.

One garden flag just isn't enough at my house.
My husband once asked: "Why so many flags? What do you think this is - the United Nations?"
Maybe.

I was chosen to be a delegate from Missouri - the summer of my Junior year in high school - to study and learn about the United Nations in person.
My father was a member of the Order of Odd Fellows in Liberty, Missouri. I was required to write an essay and give a speech to be considered, and was chosen (along with my friend, Irene) to be a part of the UN Pilgrimage for Youth.
Our three week bus tour (with other Missouri delegates) in the summer of 1966, took in several states and historic sites; two days in Washington, DC; and one week in New York.
Our bus filled with high school students from Missouri met up with 500 other students representing various states. We met together in New York. We had our own version of politics as states lobbied for their delegates to be on the student government board that presided over our New York meetings.
Missouri delegates were asked to cast their votes for a certain president, and they offered to back one of us for Song Leader. Somehow - in one swift political move - I moved to the head of the table at the Plaza Hotel (or was it the Waldorf Astoria?) as Song Leader.
Once I was asked to sing a solo when we visited a home for international students. My singing voice was not pleasant after years of cheerleading - but I know how to entertain a crowd.
I led the entire delegation and international students in one of our Liberty Bluejay chants:

We had FUN - along with exchanging views on education, politics and religion. We toured the United Nations - and had behind-the-scenes briefings conducted by specialized United Nations agencies and departments including Ambassadors, Minister Counselors and Country Representatives.
The Odd Fellows and Rebekahs United Nations Pilgrimage for Youth program is gaining public attention in the United States, Canada and abroad. The National Association of Secondary School Principals placed this program on the advisory List of National Contests and Activities.
The educational program was established by the Sovereign Grand Lodge Independence Order of Odd Fellows in 1949, when the United Nations was just four years old. High School students from around the world are invited to study and learn about the United Nations.
