Butterflies, hummingbirds, and beneficial insects are seduced by the nectar rich flowers of butterfly bushes.  Their bottle-brush flowers are painted with dazzling hues.

Butterfly Bush

The butterfly bush originated in Chile, however most species available today come from China.

A  Swallowtail butterfly was drawn to the sweet fragrance of the purple butterfly bushes in my front yard.   In fact, the butterfly bush is almost like a butterfly magnet.

Here's a photo I took of the Swallowtail who visited my garden in 2008.

"Just living is not enough,"
said the butterfly.
"One must have
sunshine,
freedom,
and a little flower."

Hans Christian Anderson

Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875), was a Danish author and poet.    He was inspired by the primitive folk tales he had learned as a child.   He wrote many poems, plays, and stories.  He is best known for his fairy tales which number over one hundred and fifty.    His first collection of Fairy Tales, Told for Children was published in 1835. He broke new ground for Danish literature with his style, irony, humor, and memorable characters.
