DIY (Do It Yourself) PROJECT:
MAGAZINE HOLDERS

Looking for a way to organize your favorite magazines?

You can purchase various shapes, sizes and colors of magazine holders...

...or you can make your own magazine holders from FREE cardboard holders.

All you have to do to get started is ASK for the containers.

I used to be a teacher.  Teachers are notorious for asking stores for display items for their classrooms.

If you have not yet asked or begged for free items from a store -- get ready for an adventure.

My daughter, Faith, and I visited two Dollar General stores, and a Deals store.

The sales clerks at Deals, and sales clerks at  one of the Dollar General stores were friendly, and happily gave us  empty or near-empty containers.

One of the sales clerks (maybe a manager?) at one of the  Dollar General stores was NOT so friendly.  She guarded the cardboard containers as if they were her prized possessions.

"Don't you go emptying my boxes!" she demanded.  "I didn't see an empty one over there! Did you empty those?    Don't you go emptying my boxes!"

There was only one -- okay -- maybe two pairs of shoes in the large container.   I very carefully put those shoes in another box still on the shelf.  I admit it.  I emptied one of the boxes, and she was mad.

"What do you do with all the empty containers?" I asked.

"We recycle them," the sales person replied.

"Why not recycle them to me?"

"You can have this one, but don't you go emptying my boxes!"  She repeated.

It was worth it.  It was worth the wrath of the sales clerk to get the large cardboard container with four  (count them...four!) compartments.

We scored big time at all three stores, and filled the back of my Nissan Quest with cardboard containers.  I also purchased items at the stores.  We are regular customers at each store.

This is what the large containers looked like before I recovered them with brown paper and scrapbook paper.

 Here's the result.

The cardboard container below held calendars at the store.  I covered it with black and white contact paper.

I tried different glues, and an Acrylic Coating, which I mistook for spray glue.  No wonder it didn't stick.  Copyright 2014 Marcia Norwood

Good luck on your quest for cardboard containers.

Have fun looking for wrapping paper and scrapbook paper to cover your containers.

I tried to shop for paper at Michaels, but experienced very bad customer service.   Let me just say that young sales clerks wearing headsets who stock shelves, and talk to each don't exemplify good customer service.
