Birdie has a new friend, RED, a hand-carved cardinal:  a gift from my amazing friend.
Isn't he handsome?

Cardinals are also called redbirds.  This beloved bird is the official bird of seven U.S. states.  Bright red cardinals are easy to identify.  Only males sport the brilliant red plumage.  Females are an attractive tan/gray.
Cardinals do not migrate, and have expanded their common range in recent decades to the north United States and even into Canada.

Male redbirds  feed their monogamous partners as they incubate cluthes of eggs - usually three per season.

Males are social with other species, but frequently attack other males who intrude on their territory in mating season.    Sometimes they fly into glass windows because they charge an "intruding bird" that is actually their own reflection.

Cardinals sing a variety of different melodies.

I realized
that if I had to choose
I would rather have birds
than airplanes.

Keep a green tree
in your heart,
and perhaps
a singing bird will come.

 Life without love
is like a tree

There is nothing holier in this life of ours
than the first consciousness of love,
the first fluttering of its silken wings.

You have to believe in happiness,
or happiness never comes...
Ah, that's the reason a bird can sing -
on his darkest day
he believes in Spring.

There are two gifts
we should give our children:
one is roots
and the other is wings.

You are every reason,
every hope,
and every dream
I've ever had.

No matter what happens
to us in the future,
every day we are together
is the greatest day of my life.

 The greatest thing
you'll ever learn
is to be loved
and love in return.
