Wisteria is a showstopper.

Wisteria blooms in the spring
                 with fragrant grape-like clusters.

Want to add privacy to sturdy pergolas?

                       Wisteria is a great choice.

Be certain the structure is able to support the  growth of the strong Wisteria vines.

Note:  Some types of wisteria are considered invasive pests - so check for any city or local restrictions before planting it.

All parts of Wisteria - especially the seeds are poisonous.

Perhaps that's why the fictional street on the U.S. television drama series Desperate Housewives was named Wisteria Lane:  beautiful and fragrant on the outside yet poisonous.

The set for Wisteria Lane is located inside Universal Studios Hollywood, and is actually named Colonial Street.  It's an area that has been used for many motion pictures and television shows...including the original Leave It to Beaver series, Gremlins, The Burbs, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

"The slightest breeze stirred the heady perfume of
lavender wisteria blooms
as they fell gently from their perch on the overhead pergola.
I exchanged my favorite perfume, Shalimar ™,
 and my Mary-Kay ™  make-up
 for Oak-N-Ivy CalaGel ™, Tecnu™,
and Calamine Lotion.
I gained ten pounds for every dose of steroids I swallowed
to get rid of the poison, oak, ivy and sumac.
Let's see . . . four doses that year,
and by the time the wisteria covered the entire pergola . . .
I was too heavy to sit in the porch swing.

Flower Bed

I discovered a literal "flower bed" at Powell Gardens, a unique Midwestern  botanical garden that offers much to explore and discover.

Marigolds are easy to grow annuals, and are available in a variety of colors:  white, yellow, orange, red and mixed colors.

Click on each photograph to enlarge.

Marigolds  bloom from mid-summer all the way until frost. They can be used for indoor arrangements, but give off a pungent odor that is sometimes too strong indoors.

Insects largely avoid Marigolds.
Insects do not like it's pungent odor.
This is why Marigolds make good companion plants.
You can even make an insect repellent spray from these plants.

The common name in English, "marigold", is derived from "Mary's gold", a name first applied to a similar plant native to Europe,  Calendula officinalis.

"Photographs tell stories.
The plantings in this photo are beautiful,
but my mind is drawn to the rake
left behind in the mulch.
The rake is evidence of a gardener
just as all creation is evidence of a creator."

THREE GATES

Before you speak,
let your words pass through
three gates.

Is it true?

Is it kind?

Is it necessary?

When I found this wonderful quote, I immediately thought of all the photos I've taken of gates, so I matched the quote with three of my favorite gates to create the collage.
