My granddaughter, Megan Jewell,

introduced me to a book:

Wreck This Journal

by Keri Smith.

Megan heard about the book

from her friend on tumblr.

The journal was unlike any I'd ever seen.

I wasn't sure if I liked it...at first.

I'm the gal who prides herself in beautiful penmanship.

I've been known to throw away a paper

if there's one mistake on the page,

and begin again.

I'm pretty creative,

but was I ready for literary rebellion?

Megan is a creative,

out-of-the box thinker and dresser.

We disagree on some of her outfits.

We disagree on some of her music.

Actually - we disagree on MOST of her music.

We disagree on some of her book choices.

We disagree on lots of things.

She's 15.

I'm 65.

We both agree:

Wreck This Journal

is great fun.

Megan had fun

with the journal prompts/suggestions

of how to wreck the journal.

I’m in the process of completing a book, "I SHARE MY HOUSE WITH CREATURES" - filled with stories and poems that I’ve been “telling” children for almost four decades! My participatory-storytelling format gives children the opportunity to become storytellers themselves as they add sound effects and share story ideas. This book has been enriched because of the children’s input.

The subtitle for the book reveals its purpose: To Help Kids Discover and Understand Their World.

Portions of the book have been accepted for

publication in a national children's magazine.

Creatures are beings

that have been created with life…

like animals, fish, birds, or people.

I share my house

with creatures…

some walk;

some fly;

some crawl.

Sometimes I like

the way they act…

Sometimes

I don’t …

at all !

A Hummingbird

A hummingbird visited my garden today.

He tasted the tangerine nasturtiums,

and sampled a bit of blue morning glory.

He swang for a while on its vine.

He did not relish the red geraniums,

nor linger at the alyssum.

The daisies did not delay him.

He hummed briefly at the bleeding hearts,

and then he was gone.

A Tree Frog

W hat keeps that frog stuck to the glass

on my back patio door?

What is the sticky stuff that keeps him

from falling on the floor?

Why did he stick his tongue out?

Do you think he is mad at me?

If I was a little tree frog….

I would rather climb a tree.

Let’s talk about frogs!

Four O'Clock

At four o'clock, The Four O'Clocks

Entertained a Butterfly.

It seemed a pleasant social call

To those who happened by.

Grand-daddy Long Legs

And a Black Widow, too,

Tiptoed past The Four O'Clocks

About four twenty-two.

The persistent Cricket Serenade

Lasted quite a while.

A carol from the Cat

Provided grace and style.

The Butterfly left The Four O'Clocks

To visit with someone new.

She did not tarry very long --

Social Butterflies never do.

(The book features other creatures

that visited my gardens one amazing day.)

I share my house

with creatures…

some walk;

some fly;

some crawl.

Sometimes I like

the way they act…

Sometimes

I don’t …

at all !

We share the Earth

with creatures…

some walk;

some fly;

some crawl.

Some we like more

than others --

Still,

we need them

one and all !
