STUDENT PORTFOLIOS
TELL STORIES
OF STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
I spent 12 years in Kindergarten and Preschool
at Independence Christian School,
and Timothy Lutheran Early Childhood Center...
as a teacher,
and I had just as much fun as the children.
It was a labor of LOVE
to create student portfolios.
I saved papers and art work
from each student to add to their portfolio,
and took hundreds of candid photos of my students
to include in their portfolio.
I also staged photo shoots each month and brought
props for my students to dress up in.
I emailed some photos to parents;
and printed and then framed some photos as gifts for the
students and their families.

Student Art Work
Never ask a child: "What is that?"
Try this:
"Tell me about your drawing."
Then LISTEN to what they have to say.
Write the story of their drawing.

Drawings children created
on the white board in our class were easily erased,
so I photographed many of the children's drawings.

A student portfolio is a systematic collection of
student work and related material that depicts a student's
activities, accomplishments, and achievements in one or
more school subjects. The goal is to tell their stories of
school achievement.
PRESCHOOL AND KINDERGARTEN
STUDENT PORTFOLIOS
I had ten preschool students,
and made the scrapbooks for their
student portfolios
before class began each year,
using large construction paper.
(It's easier to have the portfolio made before class begins,
and add a few things each month.)

I laminated the design on the cover page
with our school's laminating machine.

I bound the book
with our school's spiral binding machine.
Note:
I didn't use more expensive scrapbook paper.
It would have been cost prohibitive on my teacher's salary.
I glued in student's papers and art work, class calendars,
stickers, alphabet letter cards each month to the portfolio.
I let the children choose what to add to their portfolio,
and shared the work-in-progress portfolio
with parents at parent-teacher conferences
throughout the year.
Students took their portfolios home at the end of the year.

GRADUATION
Students added their own drawings
to grad caps that we created from poster board.
I designed a GRAD logo and took my design
to a local store and had T-shirts silk-screened.
Parents and teachers purchased T-shirts.
T-shirt purchases helped pay for
the cost of graduation decorations and supplies.

STUDENT COLLAGES
- I photographed my student's profile,
- and printed the photo and cut it out.
- Then I made ENLARGED copies
using multiple colors of photocopy paper.
- I glued the color paper profile photos to poster board,
- and added a quote from each student,
- and also added stickers, and decorations.....
- and finally laminated the poster/student collage.
to create a unique
Andy-Warhol-like collage.
They were huge,
(nearly life-size)
and one of my most favorite
(although labor-intensive) projects.
The children loved seeing their picture enlarged.
Most parents "got it" and were very appreciative.
I wish I could have had each one mounted and framed...
because one father rolled it up
and squished it under his arm.
The student was upset,
and told me her parents threw it away when they got home.

GRADUATION! Copyright 2008 Marcia Norwood |
Some parents threw away their children's
papers in the trash can in our room
when they picked up their child.
Some didn't notice the look on their child's face.
That's one of the reasons I started saving
children's art work in the first place,
and why I decided to make
a scrapbook/portfolio for each student.
I wanted the children to know that I valued their work.
I taught Core Competency III
(classes for teachers)
through the
Christian Early Childhood Association
on how to create student portfolios.

can do
to help tell stories
