We always stop at Gib's A & W on our way to and from Pella.

My daughters LOVE root beer, and
I have special memories of the A & W in my
neighborhood in Liberty, Missouri, where I grew up.

A trip to Gib's A & W is a trip down memory lane.
It's pretty much the same as it has been since 1956.

Here's what an Iowa blogger has to say about  Gib's A & W :
http://iowasue.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

" We stopped in Indianola, Iowa, the county seat south of Des Moines,  this week around lunch time, and we had to go to Gib's.  This old-style A&W has been here since 1956.  They still take your order from your table over the little telephones!  They had the traditional menu too - including Papa Burgers, Coney Dogs and those thin, crispy onion rings along with real mug root beer.  You can get your order delivered outside to your car too, and the carhop/waitress used one of those little metal coin changers.  I worked at a root beer stand one summer as a teenager, so it brings back memories.  We never stop anywhere else in Indianola for a meal - and while this very pretty town has grown a lot - many folks commute to the Des Moines metro area, and it is also the home of Simpson College and the National Hot Air Balloon Museum and is known for it's annual Hot Air Balloon Festival - Gib's has remained pretty much intact."

RECIPE:  DUTCH LETTERS
Recipe by:  Juanita Den Adel,
Resident of Vriendschap Village, Pella, IA  50210

This recipe was published in the 79th Annual (2014) TULIP TIME Town Crier

DOUGH
1 Pound Butter
4 Cups Flour
1 Cup Water

FILLING
2 Cups Sugar
3 Eggs
1 Teaspoon Vanilla
2 Cups Almond Paste (1 Pound)

GLAZE
2 Egg Whites (Beaten)
1 Tablespoon Sugar for Sprinkling

DOUGH:  Mix butter and flour as you would for pie crust.  Stir in water and mix well.  Chill overnight.

FILLING:  Beat almond paste until smooth, add remaining ingredients.  Chill dough and filling overnight.  Divide dough into 14 equal parts.  Roll sections into 4-inch by 14-inch strips.  Spread filling down the center of strip.  (I use my Mirro Cookie Press and #3 attachment.)  Fold one side of dough over the filling, then the other side, and pinch the ends shut.  Continue until all dough is used.

BAKE:  Place on greased cookie sheet with the seams facing downward.  Brush the top with beaten egg white and sprinkle sugar on top.  Prick with a fork every 2 inches for steam to escape.  Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes.

Pella's
Hallmark Store
Copyright 2014 Marcia Norwood

Hallmark commemorates one of my favorite movies,
A Christmas Story: a 1983 American Christmas comedy film
with the Legendary Leg Lamp ornament!

Nine-year-old Ralphie Parker wants only one thing for Christmas: a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle with a compass in the stock and "this thing which tells time". Ralphie's desire is refuted with his mother, his teacher Miss Shields, and even a department store Santa Claus, all giving him the same warning: "you'll shoot your eye out".

Ralphie's father wins a "major award" in a contest, but does not know what it is until it is delivered to the Parker home one night. The prize is a lamp in the shape of a leg wearing a fishnet stocking, resembling the logo of the Nehi Beverage Company. The Old Man is overjoyed by the lamp, but Mrs. Parker does not like it and a feud over it — referred to by adult Ralphie as "The Battle of the Lamp" — develops and results in the lamp's "accidental" destruction.[2]
