"Hungry birds have always been a problem for farmers.  Sometimes the birds ate so much corn or wheat that a farmer and his family would not have enough food to last through the winter.  So, for more than 3,000 years, farmers have been making scarecrows."

"The first scarecrows in recorded history were made along the Nile River in Egypt,  to protect wheat fields from flocks of quail.  Egyptian farmers put wooden frames in their fields and covered them with nets.  The farmers hid in the fields and scared the quail into the nets.  Then they took them home and ate them for dinner!"

I met Fern at Powell Gardens
at the 2013 Scarecrows in the Gardens exhibit.

Throughout October, you'll find 30-some scarecrows
on patrol in the  Heartland Harvest Garden

The entries range from minions to Minnie Mouse to more traditional takes and were created by Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, individuals, businesses and Powell Gardens' staff and volunteers.
