AS AMERICAN AS APPLE PIE

I'm as American as apple pie.

How did pie become stitched to the fabric of our American culture?

The Pilgrims brought apple spurs with them to the New World.  Most fruit trees grown in home gardens are spurring types. 

A spur is a short (3 - 5 inch) branch where the apple tree flowers and sets fruit.    Apples were one of the most popular pie fillings in early America.

Pies were an inexpensive and sustainable food source of hungry immigrants.

Today I'm sharing my mother's recipe for Apple Pizza Pie, and a fireman's recipe for No Fail Pie Crust.

It's an absolutely delicious pie baked on a pizza pan!!!

Mema's Apple Pizza Pie

NO FAIL PIE CRUST

1.  Mix Together Flour, Salt and Butter.
·        3 Cups Flour
·        1 Teaspoon Salt
·        1 and 1/4 Cup Butter

2.  Add Vinegar, Water and Egg.
·        1 TABLESPOON Vinegar
·        1 TABLESPOON Water
·        1 Large Egg or 2 Small Eggs

3.  Mix and Knead all above ingredients together. 

4.  Roll out on floured surface.

APPLE PIZZA PIE

1.  Place  unbaked pie crust on pizza pan or cookie sheet.

2.  Put a layer of apple slices over the pie crust to desired thickness.
(Slice  APPLES thinly.  Use 2 or up to 6 or more apples.  It's up to you how thick to make the pie.)

3.  Mix  Sugar, Cinnamon, and Nutmeg and Sprinkle over Apples.
·        2/3 Cup SUGAR
·        3 TABLESPOONS Cinnamon
·        1 Teaspoon Nutmeg

4.  Mix Butter, Sugar and Flour and Sprinkle over all.
·        3/4 Cup Butter
·        1/2 Cup Sugar
·        1/2 Cup Flour

5.  Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

6.  Enjoy!

Note:  Apple Pizza Pie is delicious served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.  Sometimes I refrigerate the left-over pie, and eat it cold.

Aesop's existence remains uncertain.  Numerous tales credited to him were gathered across the centuries in many languages in storytelling tradition.  Scattered details of Aesop's life are found in ancient sources, including Aristotle, Herodotus and Plutarch.  The Aesop Romance, an ancient literary work, tells a version of his life, that includes a traditional description of Aesop as a "strikingly ugly slave" - who by his cleverness acquires freedom and becomes an adviser to kings.
